How to Backup (and offsite),key data on the cheap?

1. The USB drive – typically used to share files, this universal “Nerd Bling” is extremely inexpensive and can hold up great deal of data. Just plug it into a USB port on ur computer and drag the file s and the backup
created onto it and you are in business. The device is very portable and even if you don’t hang it around ur neck (Bling factor) or pop it in ur pocket as a matter of habit, even unplugging it from ur computer and throwing it in a drawer protects ur financial documents, and anything else relatively small from the lightning strike, hack or bad patch situation. Granted, if ur house (or desk) burns down, the neck strap may not have been so embarrassing after all.

2. Old camera memory – We all seem to have a bunch of old digital camera memory, phone memory, or MP3 player memory lying around. We casually discard our measly 256M cards for the latest 4G cards now available. Put those cards back into service as a backup target! Universal memory readers, at less than $10 a pop, attach to ur computer via USB cable and it can read a variety of formats including SD/MMC, Micro SD, Memory Stick Duo, SmartMedia (SMC) and so on. While this method does not have the Bling factor of option 1, you can’t beat the price. Just remember to unplug the reader from the machine when you finish the backup.

3. Ah, Gmail… - My personal favorite method probably breaks some of the fine print on my Gmail account “User Agreement”, but why not just email myself the file that creates backup. Any free email service will work. Just use ur email as ur backup storage device.

4. Jungle Disk - This is a new service which uses Amazon's EC3 environment. It gives you highly affordable and reliable online backup, storage and file sharing for ur home or office computers, and servers. Check it out!
